Know When it's Time to Replace your Nonstick Skillet | Wednesday’s In the Know
If you’re a nonstick kind of person and love the ease of its’ use and cleanup, there may come a time where a replacement may need to enter the picture. But, how do we know when that time has come?
First, let’s talk nonstick pans!
It’s important to know when to use nonstick and when to use stainless steel…important for your health, that is! Teflon, which is comprised in most nonstick pans, not only can easily scratch when metal utensils are used, but when heated too high over too long a period can release a harmful chemical into your food. Companies, like Scan Pan, for example, do not use Teflon which I am a huge proponent of when it comes to a superior quality pan!!! So, to rest my point, use nonstick for items like a quick sauté, melting butter, or making eggs. Stainless steel or cast iron pans can then be reserved for searing meats and other ingredients which require high heat.
How to know when you’re ready to replace your nonstick?
You shouldn’t have to use a lot of oil or butter to prevent your nonstick pan from sticking. Makes sense, right? If you are making eggs and they don’t easily slide out of your pan with a gentle tilt and nudge of the pan, you know it’s time to upgrade!
