Varieties of Mango | Wednesday’s In the Know
Mango, somehow or another, always seems to put a smile on my face. And, given all the varieties of mango, there’s no wonder mango is one of America’s favorite fruits. To further understand just how incredible mango is, I have provided a great overview below including varietals, shopping for, storing and most importantly, cutting all with the goal of getting more mango in your life!
Varietals:
As provided by Mango.org
Honey, or Ataulfo: March – June
Francis: April – June
Haden: March – May
Keitt: July – September
Kent: December – February, June – August
Tommy Atkins: March – July, September – October
Palmer: August – October
Shopping for:
There is no doubt that mango is a summer fruit, but given all the varietals, that doesn’t mean other varieties aren’t available the rest of the year. Do a little research, ask your local market and see what you may find!
Storing:
In your fridge on a paper towel to help offer a “cushion” and prevent bruising.
Cutting:
1. Cut a small portion from the top and bottom so that the mango freely stands upright.
2. Using your knife, start at the top to thinly remove the peel working in a smooth stroke from top to bottom. Work your way around the mango until the entire mango is “peeled.”
3. Cut the flesh as close to the seed as possible on all sides, to remove the fruit from the core.
4. Discard the seed, and slice or dice the fruit to your heart’s content!
