Weekend Happenings: Driving Back to Cali!

This weekend, I am driving my car back to California after a few wonderful months in Seattle! Even though my reason for coming back to Seattle was for a family emergency, I couldn’t have asked for a better time! Regardless of the ultimate reason for being here, the great thing about blogging is that I can work from anywhere. Throwback Thursday: New DSLR!

A month ago, I purchased my first digital DSLR camera from Glazer’s Camera in Seattle, Washington. It was extremely intimidating walking into Glazer’s as quite frankly, I wasn’t sure which camera would be the best as I had so many recommendations, all for different models. That being said, Mike Estes could not have been more knowledgeable and not to mention patient! From a quick explanation of what I was looking for and its ultimate purpose, he quickly recommended the Nixon 3300.

One hour later I left Glazer’s with a new camera, 2 additional lenses (micro and macro), a camera bag, tri-pod, Wi-Fi adapter and a list of notes from his thorough tutorial! 

If you are interested in a new camera and live in the Seattle area, I highly recommend Glazer’s! And if not, check them out online!

Reading Recipes in their Entirety

Before you crack open your cookbook for tonight’s supper, consider this piece of advice. Before starting any recipe, I always recommend reading through the entire recipe first and foremost! This way, you can make sure that you not only have the ingredients, but also time and tools to successfully complete it! There is nothing worse than getting groceries, firing the ovens and realizing the dessert needs 24 hours refrigeration to set or that the steak needs marinating for 4 hours.

Knowledge is power so knowing exactly what you are getting into before starting, can save you in more ways than one!

Cookbook Recommendation: "Betty Crocker's Cookbook"

This oldie but goodie is probably the most worn book in my kitchen. Passed down from my grandmother to my mom and finally me, its pages are stained with all the delicious recipes that have come from within.

My favorite recipe is the classic flaky pie dough which results in a perfect buttery flaky pie crust every time!

Since this edition, numerous others have been published but there is something truly special about not only the smell, but those stains showing years of delicious recipes shared around The Table Together with family and friends!

Taste as you go!

The next time you head into the kitchen, consider this piece of advice! When it comes to cooking, flavors build as we season, obtain color and tenderize (depending on what we are cooking of course). Keeping this in mind, season lightly in the beginning and check for a perfect flavor profile right before you serve. For example, if you salt too heavily in the beginning, it could either dehydrate the protein (salt pulls moisture from proteins which is why we don’t season until right before cooking) or as the sauce thickens and becomes more concentrated and intense in taste, so does the salt! 

And always remember, we can always add more but we can’t always add less.

Cookbook Recommendation: "Barefoot Contessa Parties" By Ina Garten

To put it bluntly, Ina Garten is my hero! Not only does she speak, make – and even publish – Foolproof recipes, she is a living example of how cooking can be fun, delicious and rewarding as your family and friends gather around The Table Together sharing in a wonderful home-cooked meal! Way to go Ina!

I have Ina’s entire collection of books but prefer to speak to them as references as they are just that; tips, recipes and information on executing a successful meal shared with family and friends.  Barefoot Contessa Parties is one of my personal favorites as it not only provides mouthwatering recipes, it offers excellent tips on entertaining, menu planning and even execution!  She even throws a few cocktails in there for good measure!

Regardless of your guest list, hosting a perfect dinner party for family and friends couldn’t be easier with the help of Ina!

Throwback Thursday: Intro to Yoga

It seems like yesterday I was taking my first yoga class with my sister Liz. With a quick trip to Lululemon to pick up the essential gear (yoga mat and clothing, of course) I was ready to take on the heat – literally and figuratively! It took me a while to get used to the temperature even though it felt great on that cold rainy Seattle day, but boy did I feel amazing afterwards! My joints were fluid and my back limber. I felt like a new woman, fresh, inspired and ready to take on the world! I cannot say I stuck with it religiously after heading back to Newport Beach, but I do have every intention of doing so! And yes, you can hold me to that! Namaste;)

Whether just learning to cook or interested in taking your skillset to the next level, Martha Stewart Cooking School has you covered! From understanding techniques to perfecting your knife skills and learning about baking terminology, she has a little something for everyone. And just before you think you are “to good” for her introduction to cooking, know that I even reference her book from time to time to understand how I can take my own cooking to the next level. After all folks, it’s Martha and she didn’t get to where she is without knowing her way around the kitchen.  Fair assumption, wouldn’t you say?

However you utilize Martha Stewart Cooking School cookbook, it’s a great reference to have in your library!

Weekend Happenings! Nordstrom Anniversary Pre-Sale

This weekend my sister, mom and I will be braving the pre-sale crowds for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. The actual sale doesn’t start until July 17, but we aren’t that brave! For those of you that are braving the crowds on the morning of the 17th, I wish you luck, patience and perseverance!
