Storing Dried Spices
With Thanksgiving less than three weeks away, if you are anything like me – a planner - then you’re already starting to make plans for the big day. From setting the table and determining what place setting to use, to ordering your turkey and reminding family and friends what dishes to bring, there is a lot to do! The last thing we are probably thinking about right now are the things we already have.
Spices, we have them, lots of them, but chances are most of them may be expired. Did you know that spices are at their prime for one year, and that’s if they were stored in a cool dry place? I used to be on the, “well there’s still some in there I’m sure its fine” philosophy until I discovered the difference. Even by just smelling fresh vs. old spices you can tell a difference in the fragrance. Just image how that impacts the flavor. You’re roasting a turkey and preparing all the fixings, why shortcut your home-cooked feast with expired spices? Right?
So, before you head to the store, check your spice drawer, toss the old and shop for the new. It will make all the difference!
Cheers to starting a new tradition around the table together!
