Baked Apple Chips
Baked Apple Chips
One of my favorite ways to garnish a salad or even soup is with freshly made apple chips. The trick is selecting the perfect apple for the job! I usually use honey crisp, when I can get my hands on them, but Gala and Pink Lady work just as well. And if garnishing soup or salad isn’t of high priority, they make for a great healthy snack that even your kiddos will love. A perfect combination!!!
Yield: Approximately 2 dozen
Oven: 225ºF
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 2 1/2 hours
1 sweet crisp apple, like honey crisp, Pink Lady or Gala, sliced into 1/8-inch thick rounds on a mandolin (remove core after slicing)
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 225ºF.
2. On a baking sheet lined with a silpat or parchment paper, divide prepared apples in a thin and even layer. Repeat with a second or third baking sheet if needed.
3. Place in preheated 225ºF oven for 1 1/2 hours, flip and bake the second side for an hour, or until toasted and crispy.
4. Remove from oven and allow to sit at room temperature before storing. Note: apples will continue to crisp after they are removed from the oven.
Kitchen Note: Consider tossing apple slices with fresh spices like nutmeg and cinnamon for a seasonal twist.
